The Malanesian

There’s a good short story in the current issue of Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet called “The Malanesian.”  It’s the work of Sarah Harris Wallman, and it made me smile.  It tells the parallel stories of two young women.  One of them is Tanga, who is a live-in housekeeper/nanny for the Rogers, who is mysterious in her foreignness and quiet and polite in her service, and who tells the little girl beautiful folk stories from her homeland, Malanesia.  The other is Lexie, a rather ordinary teenager, in a Goth phase and disillusioned with her parents, who runs away from home and fends for herself among drug dealers and carnival workers.  Both of them are appealing, both are intriguing, and when they finally come together, I was delighted and surprised.  I wouldn’t dream of spoiling that for you, but a writer doesn’t generally introduce two unrelated stories and then not bring them together in some way, does she?

As a bonus, the zine also includes what looks to be a good brownie recipe.
