Here’s a short list of things that were added or updated on Project Gutenberg this week.  You should download and read one or more of them.

  • The Patchwork Girl of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.  Of course you read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  We all did.  But have you read the other Oz books?  The whole series is fun and entertaining.  The one with Dorothy and the twister isn’t even the best of them.
  • Punch!  If you were a Victorian gentleman, you were definitely reading Punch.  It was the Daily Show of its time.  PG has three new issues up: September 2, 1893,  September 9, 1893,  September 16, 1893.  Some of the jokes are so dated as to be more or less incomprehensible , but some of them are still a lot of fun.  And I like the sense of immediacy that comes from reading old magazines.
  • The Cricket on the Hearth, by Charles Dickens.  Are you bored with A Christmas Carol?  ‘Cause that’s not Dickens’s only Christmas book.
  • A Crooked Mile, by Oliver Onions.  I’m curious about this one.  Wikipedia says that Onions wrote detective stories, historical fiction, ghost stories, and psychological thrillers.  I couldn’t find any summaries of this particular book, though.  If someone else reads it before I do, comment and tell me what it’s about.
